500 km of switchbacks, war memorials, yak pastures and a 13,700 ft pass — India's greatest mountain drive, done right.
The route
Guwahati/Tezpur → Bhalukpong → Bomdila (or Dirang) → Sela Pass → Tawang. It's ~500 km but takes two full days each way — and that's the point. Break the climb at Dirang (5,000 ft) to acclimatise before Sela's 13,700 ft.
Sela Pass
A high-altitude lake, prayer flags in the wind and often snow even in April. Mornings are clearest; afternoons bring cloud and, in winter, ice on the switchbacks. This stretch is why we insist on SUVs with experienced mountain drivers.
Beyond the monastery
In Tawang: the 17th-century monastery at morning prayers, the Jaswant Garh memorial, Urgelling (birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama), and — with an army permit and a local Sumo — the breathtaking Madhuri Lake and Bumla Pass on the Indo-Tibet border.
Practicalities
ILP mandatory (we arrange it). Carry cash — ATMs are sparse past Bomdila. Pack for four seasons in one day. Ideal windows: April–June and September–October. Keep one buffer day for weather; the mountains keep their own schedule.
