Best Time to Visit North East India

Eight states, three climate zones, one honest answer: it depends where you're going. Here's the season-by-season truth.

The short answer

October to April is the sweet spot for most of the region — clear skies, open safari parks and crystal rivers. But North East India spans river plains, cloud forests and 14,000 ft Himalayan passes, so the 'best time' shifts with your route.

Winter (November – February)

Peak season for Kaziranga safaris, Dawki's transparent Umngot river and the Hornbill Festival (Dec 1–10). Tawang gets snow — magical, but carry serious layers and keep a buffer day for Sela Pass closures.

Spring (March – April)

Rhododendrons paint Arunachal and Sikkim; Yumthang Valley earns its 'Valley of Flowers' name. Kaziranga stays open till end-April. Arguably the most photogenic window across the region.

Monsoon (June – September)

Meghalaya becomes the wettest, greenest place on Earth — waterfalls at full fury. Roads in Arunachal and Sikkim can slip, and Kaziranga closes. Monsoon travel is for waterfall chasers with flexible plans, ideally with an experienced local driver.

Festival calendar cheatsheet

Hornbill (Nagaland, Dec) · Ziro Festival of Music (Arunachal, Sep) · Bihu (Assam, Apr) · Wangala (Meghalaya, Nov) · Sangai Festival (Manipur, Nov). Plan hotels 2–3 months ahead for any of these.
