Two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos live here. Ranges, timings, jeep vs elephant, and how to actually see a tiger.
Know your ranges
Kaziranga has four safari ranges. Central (Kohora) is the classic all-rounder; Western (Bagori) has the highest rhino density; Eastern (Agaratoli) is the birder's range; Burapahar is the quiet wildcard for a second day.
Jeep or elephant?
Do both if you can. The dawn elephant safari (5:30–7:30 am, seasonal) gets you within metres of grazing rhinos in golden light. Jeep safaris run morning and afternoon and cover far more ground — afternoon light is best for photography.
When to go
The park opens roughly November to April. February–April offers shorter grass after the winter burns — visibility (and tiger luck) peaks. Book elephant safaris a day ahead through your operator; slots are limited.
Practical notes
Carry ID for permits, wear muted colours, and budget separate camera fees. Foreign-national permit rates differ. Stay the previous night at Kohora so you make the dawn slot — it's the single best hour in the park.
